Increased organic input to the sea floor induces oxygen depletion in the bottom water and leakage of the trace metal manganese from the sediment. The objective is to study effects of hypoxia and increased exposure to manganese on bottom dwelling crustaceans like the Norwegian lobster, Nephrops norvegicus. Sublethal and lethal effects at different organization levels are investigated with special focuse on sensitive periods in the crustaceans life cycle; moult, reproduction, recruitment and predator/prey interactions. Spatial and temporal differences in manganese accumulation in Kattegat, Skagerrack and the Faroe islands are also studied.
