Ecotoxicological effects of pollutants in fish. The ecotoxicological research is mainly focused on biochemical and physiological effects of various pollutants (e.g. heavy metals, persistent organic compounds) and industrial effluents on fish. The work includes both studies on fish exposed in laboratory experiments and field investigations on feral fish in polluted areas. Presently the research is mainly concentrated on toxic effects of bleached kraft mill effluents on fish. In addition, various biochemical and physiological methods are developed and used to detect early effects in fish in biological monitoring programs in lakes and coastal areas of the Baltic Sea and the Skagerack.
